The key to a successful themed wedding is consistency: the dress, the flowers, the food and yes, the music are all things to consider when creating a certain look or atmosphere. Expert wedding DJ, Mark van den Berg of Mighty Fine Entertainment is on hand to let us in on his top tips for creating the soundtrack to a themed wedding.
Consider whether themed music is viable all night:
Every couple is different and so every themed wedding is different. For example, if you’re having a goth wedding, it may be a bit of a stretch to expect your nan to go nuts for Marylin Manson for an entire evening. However, a sixties-themed wedding could easily lay the foundations for a playlist to bridge the generational gap and keep people on their feet all night.
Timing is everything:
A really great DJ will have a large music collection and the knowledge to match, and will undoubtedly be able to put together a themed playlist of any kind. However, while it’s important that the music is consistent with your theme to create the right ambiance, don’t lose sight of the fact that you’re throwing a party – and people will want to get up and dance to tunes that they know.
With that in mind, consider the timing of your themed music. For example, have your themed playlist set the mood for your drinks reception and dinner, and include aspects of it in your evening party while still playing the classics that people will want to jump out of their seats for.
Get people involved:
If you feel very strongly that you only want music from a certain theme or era at your wedding, bear in mind that it may not be everyone’s cup of tea. One way to get everyone involved could be to teach them a dance or have someone leading the dancing for that particular theme. For example, if you’re having a Jewish wedding, somebody could lead the circle dance (or “hora”), if you’re having a twenties-inspired wedding, bring in a dance teacher to show people how to do the Charleston. If your theme or music is very niche or is unfamiliar to some, then make the extra effort to get them up and dancing so nobody has an excuse to sit out.
Don’t be afraid to ask for what you want:
Your DJ is there to help create your dream day. Any experienced DJ will have had every request under the sun. For example, at Mighty Fine Entertainment, we’ve set up specific playlists for a huge variety of weddings, from a Cockney playlist for a London couple to specific 60s, 70s 80s and 90s lists as well as indie, old school house, 20s & 30s swing, reggae, and the list goes on. A great DJ will know just how to work with you to incorporate your themed music into the evening and still create a great party atmosphere, so do it your way and dance the night away.

When I worked in a travel agency a few years ago honeymoons were a large part of our business, mostly with couples wanting luxury beach type getaways in order to chill out after the stress of the wedding. One couple however wanted a ski holiday though – my boss at the time couldn’t understand the desire for snow and cold, but I thought it was a great idea! Think Alpine chalets, gluhwein in a mountain top cafe/restaurant, perhaps horsedrawn sleigh rides, and of course, open fires – cold can be romantic!
For many couples a honeymoon is regarded as the most important holiday they will ever book, and where to go is way up high on the priority list. Classic honeymoon destinations such as luxury all-inclusive in the Maldives or Kenyan safaris will continue to have unfaltering appeal but being that little bit more adventurous can open up a whole new world of options. As more couples are getting married during the winter months, more seasonal destination choices can be discovered. If you are short of time substitute a stay in Venice or Paris with a short ski break to Arosa, swap a Kenyan safari with a Swedish Arctic adventure and if you need sunshine as well as snow opt for one of the ultimate combinations such as Aspen and Barbados or Whistler and Hawaii. Take a look further at some of the options offered by tailor-made ski specialist Ski Safari:
ALPINE BLISS IN AROSA:

Home to one of the most superb spas, the 5*+ Tschuggen Grand provides all the ingredients needed to help you truly relax after your wedding, with a comprehensive spa menu, an outdoor relaxation pool, a meditation room, a chill-out lounge with fireplace and its own private gondola up the mountain. The big news in Arosa this season is the new gondola link connecting the resorts of Arosa and Lenzerheide, giving an overall new combined skiing area of 225km and in doing so making it one of the largest ski areas in Switzerland.
This exclusive offer for Ski Safari customers offers a stay of 4 nights and you only pay for 3 nights. 4 nights B&B at the 5* Tschuggen Grand in Arosa starts from £895 per person, based on 2 sharing and including SWISS flights and 2nd class rail/bus transfers. Swap the crisp mountain air and white snow for the white sandy beaches and tropical sunshine of Hawaii. I adore Greece, in fact a friend and I are now in the habit of trying a different island each year. Each island is different from the last but one thing that is common to all is the friendliness of the Greek people. When I worked for a travel agency quite a few years ago I was lucky enough to go on a trip with a tour operator to Lefkas and Kephalonia, both of which were stunningly beautiful. I’m very pleased to share with you today Book on in Lefkada, with some gorgeous photos to whet your appitite!
Lefkada (Lefkas) lies shimmering like an emerald jewel in the clear, turquoise Ionian seas off the western coast off Greece. Dotted with tranquil, romantic villages, with a wealth of history and some of the most beautiful beaches in the world.
Once a hidden hide away reserved for royalty, celebrities and the glitterati including Aristotle Onassis, Jackie Kennedy, Maria Callas, Bill Gates, Giorgio Armani and Prince Albert of Monaco, over recent years Lefkada’s popularity has grown.
Lefkada’s beaches are regularly featured on the top 25 in the world. It has renowned watersports, yacht charters, stunning inland walks, magical waterfalls and villages full of character. This and its delicious Greek cuisine and stunning nightlife… Lefkada is indeed the ultimatedestination for couples and guests looking for the ultimate getaway destination.
Camille Grammer, American Television Personality, Star of Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, recently visited Lefkada and told Book On In Lefkada “I plan on going every year it’s so magical. We enjoyed every second of our time in Lefkada and hope to stay longer next time. Porto Katsiki was just AMAZING… The beach, the views, the colors were out of this world”…
